What Is CyberPals?

CyberPals are consumers, volunteers and staff of Western Alliance and Pathways who participate in an on-line support network. This is accomplished through the CyberPals listserv.

Over 100 people with disabilities, in Western North Carolina, communicate via the CyberPals program.

Who Can Join CyberPals?

Individuals with disabilities who have their own computer and e-mail account can subscribe to the listserv and immediately join the network.

If you do not have your own computer, Western Alliance offers refurbished equipment for a nominal fee.

Western Alliance has a partnership with Mountain Area Information Network which provides Internet at a reduced cost. Individuals can apply for a scholarship.

Western Alliance also offers Basic Computer Skills Classes.

Want To Help CyberPals?

Donate your computers, peripherals and software.

Come in and volunteer. We need volunteers to refurbish computers, provide tech support and to train consumers to use the Internet and e-mail.

The CyberPals program has made a huge difference in the lives of many of the participants!

"I hoped to meet people with whom I have something in common. With limited mobility in a rural area this is a difficult feat. With our computers we can overcome some of the obstacles."

"Being a CyberPal gives me the opportunity to feel independent by being able to talk to people all over the world. There really are no limits or barriers in Cyberspace."

"I never realized what a difference I could make in somebody else's life. Recently, I e-mailed a message to a fellow CyberPal and they wrote me back, saying that it had been the highlight of their day. It was a blessing for both of us. I felt needed and important once again. What a great feeling!"
